5 Signs That You Probably Need Your Dentures Repaired or Adjusted

Posted on: 5 January 2021

At first, you'll need to adjust your new dentures to ensure that they fit snugly. But within a few weeks, you should be able to use your dentures comfortably. But over time, as your jawbone changes and your dentures age, you'll need to repair or adjust them to ensure they do their job properly. Otherwise, they could damage your oral tissues and change your facial appearance.

The following are some of the common signs that you need denture repairs.

1. Your face has begun to sag

Dentures can help to provide support for your facial muscles. This support helps you to look younger by reducing wrinkles and lines around the mouth and cheeks. But as your jawbone changes over time, your dentures won't fit properly. A common sign that you need to have your dentures readjusted is facial sagging along with an increase in wrinkles and lines.

2. Speech has become difficult

When your jawbone shrinks, your dentures no longer fit as well as they once did. At this point, even denture adhesive might no longer help to keep your dentures stable. As a result, your dentures will move around, making speech more difficult. You may need to have your dentures relined.

3. Your dentures slip out more often

If your dentures have started to slip more often than usual, then this could be due to changes in the shape of your jawbone. If this is the case, your dentures need to be relined. But sometimes, dentures can warp, especially if you leave them out in the hot sun or forget to leave them in water overnight. In this case, a denturist might be able to remould your denture plate.

4. Your gums are sore on one side

Sometimes, worn dentures may have rough spots that begin to irritate your gums. A denturist can repair your denture by removing the rough spots for you. Warping can also cause a denture to put more pressure on one part of your gum, leading to irritation and soreness. In this case, your dentures need urgent repair before they damage your gum tissue and speed up bone loss. Sore gums on one side may also indicate that your jawbone has changed shape, and your dentures no longer fit as well as they once did.

5. You feel a pinching sensation on your tongue

If your dentures are cracked, then you may feel a pinching sensation on your tongue sometimes. This is an indication that your denture plate has a tiny crack somewhere. The longer you leave this issue, the worse the crack will become. If you feel a slight pinch on your tongue sometimes, take your dentures in to be repaired, otherwise, the crack could worsen and your denture could break.
